This is an event not to be missed for all those interested in the themes that Art and Mind has been exploring since its inception. John Onians, FSA (born 1942) is Professor Emeritus of World Art at the University of East Anglia, Norwich and specialised in architecture, especially the architectural theory of the Italian Renaissance; painting, sculpture and architecture in Ancient Greece and Rome; Byzantine art, material culture, metaphor and thought; perception and cognition, and the biological basis of art. His recent work has been instrumental in the establishment of Neuroarthistory as a distinct set of methodologies. After the presentation there will follow a an open floor discussion. dit. I will be showing the Shibari paintings, plus I am hoping some new work. The exhibition will run from June 6th to the 11th. Not sure if I am going to have a preview at this stage. You can find a link to the gallery on my links page. The exhibition was very well received, we had 500 visitors during the two weeks it was on. Unfortunately I became very ill with a chest infection which began as a cold just prior to the hanging of the exhibition and then continued for over three weeks, which caused problems with my invigilating the show. That aside we had some very positive comments in the Visitors book both about the curation of the show and work in general. I sold 4 of the monotype prints and Flora also sold a piece. The POW! Festival was also a big success with many more events taking place in this second year.
Been working on a new body of work for the past few months. I have returned to referencing the human body and moved into a new area, that of soft sculpture, My interest lies in body language and how body posture and it’s placement in space can communicate thoughts, intentions and feelings without the use of words. I have always had a fascination with the human psyche and its relationship to the body. and have been exploring the body as signifier of trauma, of elation, and all things in between.” I have also been working on curating a group show that will take place at the Pie Factory Gallery, in Margate next March, An exhibition of 5 female artists whose practice involves the use of unusual materials in interesting ways.. The other 4 artists are, Sally Haynes, Shirley Eccles , Julie Parker and Flora Gare..
I plan to show some large acrylic paintings and some of the soft sculpture figures - as above. The exhibition is planned as part of the POW! Thanet Festival, which takes place from 8th - 12th March 2017, and which aims to celebrate International Women's Day on the 8th March. The exhibition will include 2 and 3 D works made from plastic, cloth, glass, metal, resin, dust, tumble dryer lint and hair. A crazed day yesterday hanging my exhibition. I won't organise my Preview on the same day as my hang next time! Good Preview though. Not a lot of people came, which I expected given that it was on a Thursday night but looks like I may have sold a large painting which is great especially as the painting concerned is going to someone who I know really loves it, always good. I will take some photos and post them later. Will be sitting in on the exhibition all this week until next Wednesday.
Getting Ready for my exhibition at the Project Space, Resort Studios in Cliftonville from the 22nd-27th April. The preview is on the 21st between 6-8pm. I will be showing my experimental video I made recently as well as a mixed selection of works connected to my walks along the Thanet coastline.
Been working hard on collating all the information on galleries taking part in POW! Thanet Week from 5th March - 13th March, for the new brochure coming out in February. The website should be up a running soon so go look at their site
Last chance to see a few of my recent 'Sky' paintings at The Viking Gallery, Cliftonville Ave, Margate. They have been on display for a few weeks now and I will be removing them in the next couple of weeks. Works on display are below.
