Biography
Born in London, Sally has a long line of creative people in her family. Her father was Creative Director of the acclaimed London based advertising agency BBDO; her brother is a successful commercial photographer and her maternal grandfather was a Master painter and decorator, who was commissioned by the renowned architect Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens to decorate the interior of Heathcote, the Arts and Crafts house, in West Yorkshire. Her maternal grandmother was a seamstress, her aunt a talented milliner and her uncle used to craft beautiful toy boats and wooden marionettes, the costumes of which were made by his wife.
Shortly after completing her diploma in Art and Design, Sally continued to practice as an artist whilst living abroad for sixteen years in the middle and far east and eventually the US where she began exhibiting her work. To help support her practice and when she returned to the UK in 1987, she began teaching at Newbury College FE where she taught GCSE Art, Life Drawing and a number of adult education drawing and painting classes. During this time she enrolled on a B/A course in Art & Design at Winchester School of Art, a drawing based course which developed her passion for drawing.
In 1999 her career took an unexpected turn, when she began working for the Greenham Common Trust, as their Centre Manager, overseeing the refurbishment of the former US military Recreation Centre on Greenham Common into what has then became a purpose built Arts Centre, New Greenham Arts, with Gallery, Studio Theatre, workshop and artist studio spaces. Her role changed in 2001 to Visual Arts Manager, when she focused on programming and curating a series of contemporary art exhibitions, as well as project managing artist residencies and overseeing Studio 8 which housed the resident artists.
During her time at Greenham she continued her practice as an artist and in 2011, when she moved to Margate in East Kent, she planned to spend more time on producing and exhibiting her work. In November 2022 she moved to Frome in Somerset where she continues to practice.
